Switch health insurance: deadline 30 November

Basic health insurance can be changed each year with effect from 1 January – the cancellation must reach your current insurer by 30 November. We compare premiums and models independently and handle the switch for you.

Step by step

How it works

01

Wait for the new premiums

Approved premiums for the following year are published in the autumn. Only then can you calculate seriously – switching in summer always rests on outdated figures.

02

Review deductible and model

Adults can choose a deductible from CHF 300 to 2’500, plus a 10 % retention capped at CHF 700 a year. Family-doctor, HMO and Telmed models cut the premium further but limit your free choice of doctor.

03

Separate basic from supplementary cover

Only basic insurance can be switched freely – every insurer must accept you. Supplementary policies have their own, usually longer notice periods and require health screening at the new insurer.

04

Send the cancellation in time

What counts is arrival at the insurer, not the postmark. Send it by registered mail and early enough to be certain it lands before 30 November.

05

Check the new policy

Verify the start date, deductible, model and accident cover. If you are insured against accidents through your employer, you can exclude accident cover from basic insurance and save on the premium.

06

Check premium reductions

Depending on canton and income you may be entitled to a premium reduction. The application goes through your canton of residence and is independent of which insurer you choose.

Frequently asked questions

Answered in short

01

Can an insurer refuse me?

Not for basic insurance – acceptance is mandatory regardless of age or state of health. For supplementary cover, an insurer may refuse you or impose exclusions.

02

Can I switch mid-year?

With the highest deductible and the standard model, only as of 1 January. If your insurer raises the premium, you gain an extraordinary right of cancellation as of 31 December.

03

Is switching actually worth it?

Within the same region and age band, the cheapest and most expensive insurers often differ by several hundred francs a year – for identical benefits, because the catalogue of basic insurance is fixed by law.
